When you decide to create a website using WordPress and do a Google search for it, you may be confused as there are 2 completely different types (or versions) of WordPress; one is WordPress.com and the other is WordPress.org.
So what is the difference you ask? Let me explain…
The short explanation is that WordPress.org is where you manage the website and hosting yourself, you are completely in control, you can buy your domain name from anyone and host your website with any hosting company you like. You download the program for free and off you go (FYI: we have a create a WordPress in a day course which teaches you how to do this).
WordPress.com is an online version of the platform that uses the same core WordPress program, however, it’s a one-stop shop where they provide the domain name and the hosting as well. To get the same features as the downloadable version (blog, eComm, no ads etc), you need to pay a yearly fee for WordPress.com Premium to host and look after your site.
A bit more of the nitty-gritty differences
To explain the pro’s and con’s of the two choices, WP Sprout have done a great infographic and we agree with their summary.
Although WordPress.org takes a bit more work for you to manage it yourself, you end up having a lot more control over your website. Choose any theme and add any plugin you want, add eCommerce for free (we recommend WooCommerce), display your own ads and generally have 100% control over your website.
The con’s are that you need to do more work by setting up your hosting and adding all these extra elements yourself, as well as managing the constant updates that happen with WordPress. So if you know your way around Word and Excel well and generally have a good grasp on technology, you will be much better off with WordPress.org. And don’t forget, Flux Digital is here to guide you through it if you get stuck!
