Setting up your web hosting isn’t rocket science, you just need to know where to go and what to look for!
In this post we take you through the easy-as-pie steps to setting up your web hosting with HostGator, a company we personally use and recommend at Flux.
What’s great about HostGator are there inexpensive plans that feature the bits and bobs you’ll need, and they even have a Live Chat Option should you run into any trouble!
And yes, we are affiliates with HostGator so we do get a little kick-back if you decide to sign up with them, but there is no extra cost to you. Just think of it as fuelling our Flux coffee addiction!
So, let’s do this.
Head on over to the HostGator website and check out their plans under Web Hosting.
When deciding on a plan what you want to look out for is:
- Unlimited Disk Space
- Unlimited Bandwidth
- Unlimited Domains*
*If you plan on having more than 1 business/website, a plan with unlimited domains is the way to go so that you don’t have to register a new hosting plan for each one.
Now to decide on a plan.
Here’s a (very brief) run down on the three plans offered by HostGator:
1. Hatchling Plan
- Only for 1 domain
- Great if you only have one business/website and no current plans to create another one
2. Baby Plan
- We recommend for most businesses
- Includes the lot: unlimited disk space, bandwidth and domains
3. Business Plan
- Has all the goodies + added private security and a toll free number
Let’s keep the ball rollin’.
Once you’ve chosen, we recommend selecting a plan duration of 1 year, just because you never know what could happen in the future!
When you’re ready to sign up you will be taken to the registration page.
Here you have two options: register a new domain or use an existing one you already own.
If you are thinking of registering a domain with HostGator, keep in mind that they don’t cater to “.com.au” domains. So if you want a “.com.au” you can register a domain with another company like Crazy Domains.
After adding your domain and making sure you’ve selected the right plan and billing cycle – again, we recommend 1 year – choose your username and security pin and fill in the rest your details.
Ignore the add-ons they recommend, however, if you want some extra security you can add the SiteLock.
Agree to the Terms and Conditions and voila! You have created your hosting account.
Check out our video below showing you the steps!
You’ve done it! So now what?
Wait for your email confirmation and take note of the:
- DNS (name server) details
- cPanel login details
