All of the Flux Digital website creation packages are based on WordPress themes, so the first decision we ask our clients to make is to choose a theme that they want to become the starting point of their website. Once you have chosen the theme and the template you want to use, decisions like font, colours, copy and images become infinitely easier as you have a ‘demo’ to base these choices on … you may be super lucky and love the fonts, colours and layout of a particular template so you only have to edit copy and images.

Choosing a website theme can be a bit overwhelming, WordPress comes with lots of free ones (we don’t recommend these) or there are thousands available online in places like Themeforest. The thing to remember with themes is you are not completely stuck with the look and feel of the theme as most of the good ones are highly customisable, by the time you add your branding elements and your own images, the website starts to become your own. What you need to look at and consider when choosing a theme is things like the main page layouts, the navigation menu style, the functionality, the extra elements and how customisable they are. My recommendation is to choose one that is ‘most’ like what you would want and go from there, don’t get hung up on the choice.

Not all themes are created equal and some are actually quite difficult to update and navigate around in the back end of WordPress so be careful of your choosing. Flux works with 2 themes called Salient and Bridge that we love to use and recommend, they are both top selling themes, created by power elite users on Themforest. You will find individual videos in this course on how to choose a template from each of these themes, below is a little summary of the pros and cons of each to help with the decision making.

Salient

Salient is super easy to use behind the scenes and you can create any type of site using the Visual Composer page builder. There are not that many templates or demos to start from but for a beginner, it is a perfect theme to use as it is so easy and intuitive to understand and update. It is also great if you want to revamp an existing WordPress website.

We have a DIY course on Create a Stunning Website with the Salient theme

Bridge

Bridge also uses the Visual Composer page builder, however, the developer has added in extra ‘bells and whistles’ to it so there are more options, which can make working with the back end a bit more confusing and overwhelming for the beginner. If you know your way around WordPress you will be fine. The brilliant thing about this theme and the reason we love it is that there is 200+ templates to use. So if you are going to stick really close to the template look and feel it is a great ‘base’ to start from. If you need your site to look a lot different from the starter templates and you are a beginner, you may want to consider Salient or getting help to set it up for you.

We have a course on Create a Beautiful Website on the Bridge theme

When choosing a theme, you will need to consider things like:

  • The navigation style (centred, left, split, double)
  • The blog style (full width, masonry, right or left sidebars)
  • The portfolio style (full width, multiple columns, sidebars)
  • Any other page layout styles (about, services, contact)
  • Elements you might like to include (tabs, testimonials, image galleries, pricing tables, icons, buttons)

So take note of these individual pages and options when you are checking out the theme demos.

No matter which option you go with, we highly recommend that you prepare using the FREE Flux Digital Website Preparation Course as it will make the process much smoother and simpler, even if you are going down the DIY path.
